Delirious? Update

The five boys from England's sunny south coast are getting ready. 1997 was characterised by hectic yo-yoing in and out of the UK singles and albums charts. The first half of 98 saw a frenzy of passport stamping as they criss-crossed the Atlantic, fulfilling dreams and duties on various promotional tours of the US. And now they're here: late 98, getting ready for what comes next.

What actually does come next is a strange mixture of the familiar and the unknown. The plan is to move on to the next level, tickling people with a new album and singles. The songs themselves will be the key players in the attempt to take the Delirious? message out further than ever before.

The album was begun in January of this year, and is due for completion in time to be on the shelves in March (with the first single cropping up in January). The transatlantic tripping clearly cut into the studio time, but there is another reason for the long gestation of the second album: the desire to get it right.

Over the summer a handful of the new material has made its way into the live set: the punkpop Bliss, the musically mature Mezzanine Floor and the twin howitzers See The Star and Heaven. Early gossip suggests the fans see them as some of their best material yet.

The other key player in the tactical battle for chart action is the distribution. The plans reflect the ambition. More news as we hear it.

All this chat about the future is in danger of glossing over the recent past. Thanks to the superb work of Sparrow - the label Delirious? are signed to in America - King Of Fools has made a serious impression on the US charts and they played to over 175,000 people during the summer. The band were also offered a 70 date American support slot on the DC Talk tour. Despite the chance of getting acquainted with over 500,000 potential new fans the band were 100% sure that it was the UK that would receive their full attention. Extensive travel and a little taste of success overseas has made the band more determined than ever to spread the message at home.

And so there you have it: there have been some successes but the band are still hungry, still desperate to reach as many people as possible. But what of the message? Has it changed? Judge for yourself...
