This is Jon the bassist signing in with the latest from the boys. We are currently sitting on a runway in Washington DC waiting for take off clearance. [its a hard life]. My fellow band members are seated with me but they are not with me as they are in their own little dream worlds catching up on some well earned rest after a fantastic first leg of the summer US tour.
The tour began in Shirleysburg Pennsylvania at the Creation festival where we besieged the stage in some of the most colourful outfits to date. Some might say the east Atlantic sunshine must have gone to our heads, never the less, 55 thousand Americans enjoyed the show as well as 5 pale skinned British boys,1 in a orange karate suit, 1in a bright green sequined suit, 1 in a white and red out fit that a Hawaiian waiter would be proud of. To top it all it was my birthday, so what a great start to a tour and what a great birthday party.
From PA it was back on the bus for an eight hour drive to Fort Wayne, Indiana. We were greeted there with a miracle grown mirror ball that put "It's Ok" into another league leaving the crowd with an audible gasp, making Hutch's night. Martin was up to his old tricks as energetic as ever and venturing into the crowd to be with "the history making people".
St Louis will be remembered by the flags of the world that hung from the rafters and the crowd that sang the songs as if we were playing in our home town about 4 thousand miles east.
July the 4th and the D:boys were in Shreveport celebrating Independence Day! A beautiful irony if ever there was one...We celebrated by challenging the residents of the hotel to a game of water volley ball. Unfortunately we lost but had the game been football, the story would have been quite different. We then took to the stage, myself proudly wrapped in a Union Jack to add to the irony of the event. Stu.G. opened the set with a monster version of the star spangled banner morphed into God Save the Queen while the arena stood and watched with much respect and bemusement.
Day 6. and it was time to see a little more of America, but this time it was in the form of a day off. So to Memphis Tennessee we went. It was a dream come true for me so I went all the way and wore my Elvis t-shirt in honour of the occasion. The first stop had to be Graceland so down Elvis Presley Blvd we drove to join with the hundreds of other Elvis fans travelling to the rock and roll Mecca. We walked through the legendary house with our tourist head phones blazing and our legs swinging to the tunes of the King. Then it was on to Sun Studios where Elvis started his recording career and U2 recorded Rattle and Hum. This humble studio which hails to be the birth place of rock and roll vibrated with vibe and history. The end to a perfect day was spent on Beale Street listening to some good old fashioned rock and roll.
From the birthplace of rock and roll we headed north to one of the most rock and roll festivals of the year...The Cornerstone festival in Illinois. This place has to be seen to be believed, its got a freedom verging on wildness about it that makes us Delirious boys feel very at home. Last time we played this festival MC Hammer! was there but this time the head line spot was left up to us and we enjoyed every second of it. Martin went crowd walking in true rock star style while the rest of us were joined on stage with little creatures called dune bugs that sang and danced with us.
The last two shows were at theme parks where we had the chance to get out on a few rides and scare ourselves silly before taking to the stage with a few of our old friends such as the Newsboys and Jars of Clay.
So here we are back up in the sky heading towards the homeland having played to about 82 thousand people in 8 cities, 4648 land miles, too many burgers and 1 broken door involving Andy Hutch [the lighting monkey] and my head.....but that's another story...
