Last modified: 22 Aug 2006
Delirious? drummer Stew Smith took part in his first Ironman Triathlon race on Sunday (20th August). He finished the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile marathon run in 130th position out of more than 1000 participants. Stew's finishing time was 10 hours, 49 minutes and 27 seconds.
Stew was taking part in the Ironman Triathlon, at Sherbourne in Dorset (UK), to try and raise £10,000 for two charities he is supporting. 'Links International' work to empower others around the world to achieve their own destiny, helping with Primary Health Care and Micro-enterprise Development. 'The Wire' is a charity local to the band, based in their home town of Littlehampton. It provides practical, creative and accessible activities for children, young people and families in the area.
Discussing his training for the race, Stew told Christian Music Today that he had learned
"a lot about myself and what it takes to push the body to its limit. I have seen that with training, sacrifice and huge amounts of perseverance we can push through, running the race to 'win the prize.' Ironman is fun but having a vibrant relationship with God is the most important goal that we need to run for."
